Help us celebrate Green Libraries Week!
Published Date: 22nd October 2026
MWL Library and Knowledge Service are taking part in this year’s Green Libraries Week from the 21st to the 28th of October 2026, and we have some great displays and initiatives to help you to go green!
This annual campaign celebrates the vital role libraries play in tackling climate and sustainability challenges. Bringing together public, academic, health and specialist libraries across the UK, the week showcases innovative projects that help communities build environmental awareness, develop practical green skills and take positive action on climate issues. By connecting libraries and highlighting their sustainability work, Green Libraries Week aims to inspire learning, encourage community engagement and position libraries as trusted hubs for climate information and action.

At both Southport and Whiston Libraries, there are displays of the green and sustainable books we have in stock – perfect to give you some inspiration to be more sustainable in your daily life. Borrowing these resources, rather than buying new, is in itself a great example of being more aware of your impact on the planet. There are also a number of titles available online which you can access through our online catalogue here. Our displays will also guide you to resources to help find the best quality information on green and environmental issues.
We have also produced the latest edition of the Green Gazette - the online sustainability and environmental newsletter for all MWL staff. This is a quarterly publication covering the latest news, research, ideas and tips about all things green! If you have any suggestions for features in future issues, or any comments, please email library@merseywestlancs.nhs.uk. You can access the latest edition of the Green Gazette here. Past editions are available on the Library website.

Or you might choose to get growing! Gardens can improve our wellbeing, helping us feel calm and giving us a sense of purpose. Southport Library has a Seed Library where staff can visit and take away some vegetable, flower or herb seeds. Find out more about the initiative here or email us at library@merseywestlancs.nhs.uk.
Through Green Libraries Week, libraries show how small actions, shared knowledge and community spirit can help create a greener, more sustainable future for everyone. Join us at Southport and Whiston Libraries to find out more.
