Book of the Week - Mother country : real stories of the Windrush children

Published Date: 22nd June 2026

Today, Monday 22 June, is Windrush Day. Windrush Day acknowledges and celebrates African-Caribbeans, and their descendants, who began arriving in the UK on the HMT Empire Windrush in 1948 to contribute to the post-war economy. It provides an opportunity to honour and appreciate contributions made to British society and culture and serves as a reminder of the struggles they faced, and their determination to overcome them.

For the pioneers of the Windrush generation, Britain was 'the Mother Country'. They made the long journey across the sea, expecting to find a place where they would be welcomed with open arms; a land in which you were free to build a new life, eight thousand miles away from home.

Our Book of the Week explores the reality of their experiences, and those of their children and grandchildren, through 22 unique real-life stories spanning more than 70 years.
