Topic of the Month - Sepsis

Published Date: 10th September 2026

September is Sepsis Awareness Month and September 13th marks World Sepsis Day which is why we have focused on sepsis for our topic of the month.

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to an infection becomes uncontrolled and injures its own tissues and organs. It can lead to shock, multiple organ failure and death if it is not recognised early and treated effectively. Sepsis crosses biological, clinical, demographic and pathogenic boundaries and treating it is a multi-disciplinary responsibility.

The UK Sepsis Trust has a Healthcare Hub https://sepsistrust.org/healthcare-professionals/, which is a dedicated page providing health professionals with free clinical tools, access to e-learning materials and patient signposting information.

Both libraries have displays with resources and we have also put together a resource guide with links to articles, podcasts, explanation about Sepsis Six, training, NHS England Framework and more https://library.merseywestlancs.nhs.uk/information-resources-archive. If you would like more information please contact us library@merseywestlancs.nhs.uk.

Did you know that both libraries have The Sepsis Game where you can practice your knowledge?

The game focuses on raising awareness of sepsis, improving recognition and management of sepsis. It was developed in partnership with NHS England, Health Education England, e-Learning for Healthcare and the UK Sepsis Trust.

Why not borrow it for your next team meeting?
