Acute medicine 2050: A connected future of care

Abstract
By 2050, acute medicine will function within a substantially transformed clinical and organisational landscape. Demographic pressures, environmental change and rapid advances in digital and biological technologies will reshape how acute illness is recognised, triaged and treated. Acute care will increasingly function as a connected, anticipatory system spanning hospitals, homes and virtual environments, enabled by continuous monitoring, intelligent decision support and precision diagnostics. These developments offer the potential to smooth demand, anticipate deterioration and reduce avoidable admission while ensuring timely escalation for patients who need hospital-level care. Delivering this vision will require interoperable digital infrastructure, improved workforce models and deeper integration across the acute care pathway. Despite these advances, the defining purpose of acute medicine will endure, responding decisively and compassionately to people at moments of need. Acute medicine will act as the adaptive clinical core within future urgent and emergency care systems.
