Conference Abstract
Background: Enhancing patient engagement in diabetes management is essential for optimising health outcomes among young adults. To promote meaningful dialogue within our diabetes service, we implemented pre-clinic questionnaires designed to capture patient concerns and interests.
Method(s): An audit of patient responses from two consecutive years, 2022-2023 and 2023-2024, was conducted to evaluate trends in engagement and topic preferences. Patients identified issues they wished to discuss during clinic visits, and we assessed their perceptions regarding 1 the adequacy of information provided, their level of involvement in care management, and the support they felt during consultations.
Result(s): Analysis revealed significant shifts in patient interest across several topics. Inquiries regarding weight loss increased from 16% to 19%, and concerns about alcohol consumption rose from 4% to 7%. Notably, worries about hypoglycaemia rose from 10% to 14%, while interest in fluctuations in sugar levels surged dramatically from 12% to 26%. Additionally, demand for discussions on insulin pumps and technology increased from 14% to 22%. Mental health remained a critical area of interest. Feedback indicated that patients felt well-supported in the clinic and reported high levels of involvement in their care, reflecting positively on our service.
Conclusion(s): The implementation of pre-clinic questionnaires effectively illuminated key areas of interest and concern among young adults with diabetes. These insights will inform enhancements in service delivery, ensuring patients feel informed and actively engaged in their care management. A sustained focus on these topics is vital for fostering effective communication and improving overall health outcomes.
