Conference Abstract
Aims: Our aim was to develop a Diabetes Workshop for the Mersey & West Lancs (MWL) Preceptorship Pathway in line with the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) principles of preceptorship. In 2022, the MWL Preceptorship Pathway was awarded the Preceptorship Interim Quality Mark and shortlisted for a Nursing Times Workforce Award in 2023. The workshop would be suitable for allied health professionals (AHPs) and registered nurses (RNs) with the aim to provide structured support to transition knowledge to everyday practice.
Method(s): Through coordination with department leads and engagement with the preceptorship team we integrated feedback from previous sessions to refine our approach. We developed pre-course and post-course questionnaires and seamlessly incorporated formative assessments throughout. We utilised interactive and digital teaching tools such as word clouds and quizzes, ensuring an engaging learning experience. Our multifaceted teaching strategy combined face-to-face presentations, self-directed study and hands-on clinical skills sessions.
Result(s): There was overwhelming positive feedback from staff attendees, with higher participation rates from AHP staff. Participants responded positively to the integration of interactive and digital teaching tools, this, in turn, enriched learning outcomes. There was improved interdepartmental collaboration between the Diabetes Specialist Team, the Education Team and Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) department leads.
Conclusion(s): In conclusion, this concept has led to increased participant satisfaction, created professional development opportunities for both AHPs and RNs, and established structured support mechanisms. This has resulted in increased confidence within the MDT when managing diabetes patients within a clinical setting with the plan to look at rolling out the workshop principles to other teaching programmes.
