P-149 Multi-cystic peritoneal mesothelioma in under 40's: A new exposure
Published Date: 09th October 2024
Publication Authors: Harris. C, Srivastava. N
Background:
The peritoneum is the second most frequent site of origin of mesothelioma, after the pleura. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma are unspecific, the most frequent being increased abdominal girth, pain, and weight loss; usually diagnosis occurs late. Treatment includes the combination of debulking surgery and chemotherapy, but evidence suggests survival remains poor for asbestos-associated exposure leading to malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.
Aims:
At Mersey and West Lancashire NHS Trust, we have seen a recent increase in pre-menopausal, female patients with no previous medical history presenting with non-specific symptoms to Gynaecology and subsequent imaging and diagnostic laparoscopy has confirmed multi-cystic peritoneal mesothelioma. As it is so rare, there has not been much research into the causes of MCM and associated risk of asbestos exposure leading to malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.
Methods:
The poster will present a review of patient symptoms and background, diagnostic images from MRI and CT and diagnostic laparoscopy and explore treatment and surveillance options based on diagnosing histology and clinical staging of disease considering factors such as:
- Preserving fertility
- Complete cytoreduction surgery
- Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy
Conclusions:
The poster will report what local services there are for patients needing clinical care and highlighting gaps in current research and local practice with only one specialist centre in the UK currently providing MDT reviews and surgical care.
